AT SPG we are using Intumescent Coatings more and more in the Cambridge are aswell as Nationally because they provide a high standard finish aswell as delivering outstanding quality and reliability. Intumescent coatings can be water or solvent based and can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. The materials follow the contours of the steel and can be easily applied in complex and difficult to reach areas.
Passive fire protection is an important part in maintaining structures integrity. Recently price efficiencies and improvements in technology have created a situation where intumescent coatings have come to dominate the structural fire protection market. Thin film Intumescent coatings are used to provide 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes fire resistance.
Thin film intumescent coatings are put together with organic materials and are inert at low temperatures. They swell (or intumesce) to provide a charred layer of low conductivity foam when temperatures are too high, this char layer reduces the rate of temperature rise in the steel and prolongs the steels load bearing capacity.
